Diversity Matters Awareness Week

Diversity Matters Awareness Week (DMAW) launch took place on the the 18th – 22nd April 2016 with events themed around race matters in the learning environment. This event allowed for discussion on the low percentage of BAME staff in academic positions and senior management which is having a direct impact on the attainment and retainment of BAME (Black and Ethnic Minority) and International Students (see UAL’s and Diversity Report 2015).

Feedback responses for #DMAW16 from UAL student’s and staff

“It provides a space for staff and students to discuss important matters and needs to be much more than a one off”

“Enabled conversations which do not usually take place.”

“Yes, it should be a regular event every year.”

“The night was pronounced and very moving. To see staff students and Senior Management in one safe space was one of a kind. We want more of this. Open debate. Real life voices. Feelings shared. A space for the universities bodies to express their actions and hopes to improving important matters.”

“I enjoyed being on the panel last year and agree that the topic needs discussions and actions, making staff (at all levels) and students more aware of the various layers of diversity and how it could be implemented from the perspective of students and staff at HE institutions.”
